Penang and MH370

18 Feb / 06 Mar 2019

The co-pilot's mobile phone was detected at 01:52:27 MYT 08 Mar 2014, by sector 2 of the BBFARLIM2 base station which is located at Bandar Baru Air Itam on Penang Island. This was assumed by the Malaysian investigation to indicate that at 01:52:27 MYT the plane was within the area marked with green on this map, which is sourced from [1].

However, in my opinion this is no indication that the plane was anywhere near Penang at that time. The system of phone masts on the ground was not designed to accurately locate planes in the air. From a plane in the air, a mobile phone is capable of pinging a mast a great distance away.
